How it works
Short and checkable: every limit links to the platform's own page, read on 28 Oct 2026.
Crop to fill
The largest part of your picture with the new shape, centred, scaled to the new size. Full screen, nothing added — but from 16:9 to 9:16 you keep under a third of the picture.
Fit with bars, or over a blur
The whole picture, scaled to fit, with bars where it doesn't reach. The blurred version fills those bars with a zoomed, blurred copy of the same video.
Commands you can run
Each way comes with its ffmpeg line, sizes already worked out and kept even (video encoders need even numbers). ffmpeg is free and runs on your own computer.
What it doesn't do
- It doesn't follow faces: the crop is centred; move it by changing the x / y values in the command.
- The commands copy the sound as it is and re-encode the picture with ffmpeg's default settings.
- There is no file here, only numbers.
Questions
How do I turn a 16:9 video into 9:16?
Either crop: keep a 9:16 window of the picture (from a 1920 × 1080 video, a 608 × 1080 band, about a third of the width), or fit: shrink the whole picture and fill the rest with bars or a blurred copy. The tool gives the ffmpeg line for each.
What resolution is 9:16?
1080 × 1920 is the usual size for TikTok, Reels and Shorts; 720 × 1280 is the smaller one.
Crop or fit, which is better?
Crop when the subject stays in the middle; fit when everything in the frame matters, like a screen recording.

Made for vertical from the start.
Vertiscale edits every video for 9:16: an upright clip fills the screen, a landscape one sits over a blurred copy of itself.
